Global Warming

Global warming is the exceptionally rapid rise in temperature of the Earth's surface during the past century, mainly because of greenhouse gases released by fossil fuels. The major cause for global warming is the emission of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, etc. into the atmosphere. The largest source of carbon dioxide is the power plants. These plants produce large amounts of carbon dioxide produced by burning fossil fuels for electricity production. Approximately twenty percent of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere comes from the engines of the vehicles.

Constructing commercial and residential property are major source of global warming pollution than cars and trucks. The construction of these structures require a large amount of fuel to burn which inturn emits large amounts of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Another reason is the higher methane emissions. It is 20 times more effective than CO2 to draw heat from the atmosphere. Methane is derived from resources such as rice paddies, bovine flatulence, bacteria in bogs and fossil fuels. Another reason of global warming is deforestation which is caused by cutting and burning of forests for subsistence and industrialization.

Facts about Global warming, or climate change:

1. Average temperatures have risen 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit (0.8 degrees Celsius) around the world since 1880.

2. The last two decades of 20th century were the hottest in 400 years and possibly the warmest for several millennia.

3. Glaciers and mountain snows are rapidly melting. Montana's Glacier National Park which ahs 150 glaciers in the year 1910, now has only 27 glaciers.

4. An increase in extreme weather events such as wildfires, heat waves and intense tropical storms, is also partly attributable to climate change.

5. Industrialization, deforestation and pollution has significantly increased atmospheric concentrations of water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide, all greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to trap heat near the surface of the Earth.

Tips to control Global Warming:

1. Switch off unwanted electric equipments immediately. Do not use them if not necessary.

2. Replace the old ones with energy efficient lighting like CFLs which also improve the efficiency of home appliances.

3. Use Smart Cooler, Heater & Air Conditioner.

4. Changing air filters annually, having your system checked annually.

5. Burning Waste Methane. Burning one molecule of methane generates one molecule of carbon dioxide.
